ABC News Top Stories and Hamish and Andy in tight race to be Australia’s number one podcast

ABC News Top Stories retained its crown in June, but Hamish & Andy are hot on its heels, with a little under 5,000 listeners separating the top two podcasts.

ABC News Top Stories has retained its number one spot on the Australian Podcast Ranker for June 2025, attracting 781,067 monthly listeners. However, the lead is now slim, with Hamish & Andy just behind on 776,321, narrowing the gap to under 5,000 listeners as the veteran comedy duo edges closer to reclaiming the top position.

It marks a steady climb for Hamish & Andy, who returned to the number two spot after falling to #10 earlier in the year due to a content hiatus. The duo’s resurgence comes despite their typically limited episode output, underscoring the show’s sustained popularity and listener loyalty.

In third place, Mushroom Case Daily, also from the ABC stable, reached 670,856 listeners. Mamamia Out Loud and Shameless followed at #4 and #5, with 537,240 and 501,218 listeners respectively, maintaining their long-running presence among Australia’s most popular conversational podcasts.

ABC News Daily and Life Uncut landed at #6 and #7 respectively, with Sky News Australia Update, Conversations & Squiz Today rounding out the top 10.

The June results come as the industry celebrates a major milestone, with new research revealing that 52 per cent of Australians now listen to or watch at least one podcast every month.

Listening levels have more than doubled since 2020, demonstrating the medium’s shift from niche to mainstream.

What’s trending in genres?

News remains the most consumed podcast genre in Australia, reaching nearly 4.85 million monthly listeners, followed closely by Society & Culture (4.6 million) and Sport (3.4 million). True Crime also continues to hold strong, now accounting for 3.4 million listeners monthly—particularly notable for its purchasing power, with 83 per cent of True Crime listeners identified as primary grocery buyers, according to CRA’s Demos+ data.

June’s top five podcasts, ABC News Top Stories, Hamish & Andy, Mushroom Case Daily, Mamamia Out Loud, and Shameless, offer a clear snapshot of the industry’s current shape: a hybrid of news-led daily drops and loyal, fan-driven conversation shows.
